The role

People across Canada ask us for counselling every day — more than 13,720 cases since 2024. As a volunteer counsellor, you provide up to 12 free sessions per client, by phone, video, or in person, while your own practicum site and supervisor anchor the clinical side of your practice.

What you’ll do

  • Provide free counselling sessions by phone or video — or in person in Toronto or North Vancouver
  • Support clients matched to your competencies and languages
  • Practice with the guidance of your weekly clinical supervisor

What we ask

  • Provide 12 pro bono counselling sessions per client — entirely free, no exceptions
  • An active practicum site and supervisor who supervises you weekly (written approval required)
  • Practice under your province or territory’s counselling & psychotherapy regulations
  • Counselling insurance and a recent (within 5 years) vulnerable‑sector police check
  • A phone number clients can reach you on

What you’ll get

  • An onboarding session that prepares you before your first client
  • No minimum client load
  • Free access to the Society’s Jane app for practice management
  • A community of 300+ volunteer counsellors across Canada
  • The kind of impact that reminds you why you chose this profession

Volunteer FAQ

What volunteers ask us most.

Yes. We run a regular onboarding session that trains every counsellor before they begin serving clients — you’ll never be handed a client without knowing how everything works.
